The Kinto Un (キント 雲, Kinto Un; FUNimation "Flying Nimbus", Viz "Kinto'Un"; Literally meaning "Kind Cloud"), or Kinto-Un, is a yellow magical cloud that serves as a vehicle. Son Goku obtains the Kinto Un from Muten Roshi in the third episode of Dragon Ball as a consolation for saving Kame. It serves Goku and his sons well throughout Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z by acting as a way for them to fly around at high speeds without using up any energy. The Kinto Un makes its last brief appearance in Dragon Ball GT during the closing scene of the last episode when Goku flies off on it.

The Kinto Un was originally given to Muten Roshi by Karin upon reaching the top of Karin Tower. He, in turn, gave it to Goku as a replacement reward for rescuing Kame. In the manga and Latin American anime dub, Roshi originally intended to have his Immortal Phoenix grant Goku immortality, but Kame reminded him that the creature had died from tainted birdseed. (This reason is also used in Dragon Ball: The Path to Power). In the English anime, the gift was to be a Magic Carpet, but Kame reminded Muten Roshi that it was at the cleaners. The Kinto Un could only be ridden by someone with a pure heart, so Roshi was unable to demonstrate how to use it due to his lust for women nor could Bulma becuase was also impure. This is also comically used several other times to reveal the true nature of many others, such as Kuririn who immediately confessed to his dirty magazines which he was carrying. One exception exists; the fact that the Kinto Un can also support inanimate objects lain upon it, which as such are free of any particular alignment.

Goku's original Kinto Un was destroyed by Piccolo Daimao's son Tambourine, but he was given another one from Karin after Goku survived drinking the Ultra Divine Water. Karin possesses several Kinto Uns, which are stored together as a big orange cloud. Goku chose a new one from this stock, and this one continued to be used by both Goku and his sons for the rest of the series.

During Dragon Ball Z, the Kinto Un was used by Goku during the Saiyan Saga. He used the Kinto Un to chase down and save Son Gohan from Raditz and to race toward the battlefield to save his friends from the evil Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa. The Kinto Un perhaps most notably saved Gohan from being stomped to death by Nappa. After recovering in the hospital from the injuries he received during the fight with Vegeta, Goku uses the Kinto Un once more to travel to the Capsule Corporation and begin his journey to Planet Namek in Dr. Brief's spaceship. This is the Kinto Un's last appearance for quite some time since the use of high-speed flight outclasses it. It is next again during the Great Saiyaman Saga when Gohan used it to fly from Mount Paozu to Orange Star High School, and even raced with it after becoming the Great Saiyaman. He later gave it to his little brother, Son Goten, after getting the Saiyaman Watch from Bulma – an object that allowed him to fly without the fear of someone recognizing him. The Kinto Un is only used once by Goten since he would soon learn to fly after Gohan taught him. This would be the final time the cloud would appear in both the anime and manga of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.

The Kinto Un makes its final appearance in the last episode of Dragon Ball GT when Goku says goodbye to the audience and flies away on it.

• Son Gohan (Used his father's as a teenager to travel to and from high school; he even races it as the Great Saiyaman. The Kinto Un saved him from being stomped by Nappa as a child; eventually he gave it to Goten.)

Origin

The Kinto Un is one of the two items that Goku possessed that mimiced the character "Sun Wukong" in the Chinese novel Journey to the West. (Sun Wukong rode on a magic cloud.) The other is the Nyoibou. (Sun Wukong also used.)

Dark Kinto Un

The Dark Kinto Un could be used by impure people. As demonstrated on Tao Pai Pai, it could be controlled by Karin to fail to work.

Trivia

• The Kinto Un can fly very high. When Goku tried to use the Kinto Un to go to Kami's Lookout, Karin said that this was the highest he could go. This was probably because Kami's Lookout was above the clouds.
• Yajirobe attempts to ride Karin's Kinto Un, but was not successful – showing he did not have a pure heart.
• Though it was said that the Kinto Unn could not be destroyed during the Red Ribbon Army Saga, Tambourine somehow destroyed it. It is possible that this is because Tambourine used energy as opposed to the missile Silver used to blast it. It is also possible that it was because no one as powerful as Tambourine had ever tried to destroy prior to the King Piccolo Saga in the Dragon Ball series.
• The subtitles in the European version of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai refer to it as the "Magic Cloud".
• In the Italian dub, it is named "Nuvola (Cloud) Speedy".
• In the Spanish dub, it is named "Nube Voladora" (Flying Cloud).
• In Dragon Ball: Origins, the Kinto Un is shown to fly at over 400 mph.
• In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Trunks is shown riding alongside Goten on the Kinto Un in the game's main menu.
• Although Gohan gives the Kinto Un to his younger brother Goten, which originally belonged to their father, Goku had a Kinto Un in the manga which he gave to Oob.
